Year 5 Words Ending in -ent, -ence and -ency Worksheets (1015-1017)
This Year 5 Words Ending in -ent, -ence and -ency worksheet set helps pupils understand and practise an important KS2 spelling pattern. Children learn that some adjectives ending in -ent can be changed into nouns ending in -ence or -ency, such as different → difference and fluent → fluency.
The activities are designed to build spelling accuracy, word awareness and vocabulary confidence. Pupils practise recognising word endings, forming related words, choosing the correct word in context and using more ambitious vocabulary in their own writing.
The worksheet set is differentiated across three levels:
Triangles focus on sorting words into -ent, -ence and -ency groups, adding endings to word stems and completing sentences using a word bank. This level includes words such as different, confidence, urgency, fluent, patience, frequent, difference, innocent, fluency, independence, efficient and silence.
Circles develop the pattern further by asking pupils to form related adjective and noun pairs, including confident / confidence, urgent / urgency, fluent / fluency, frequent / frequency, efficient / efficiency and patient / patience. Pupils then complete sentences and rewrite incorrect sentences using the correct word form.
Squares provide a more challenging vocabulary and application task. Pupils complete sentences using words such as evidence, confidence, difference, urgency, frequency, efficient, patience, independence, innocence, obedient and permanent. They also write short meanings and create their own sentences using key words.
This resource is ideal for Year 5 English, KS2 spelling lessons, homework, intervention, revision and independent practice. It also provides useful preparation for Year 6 SATs spelling and grammar expectations, as pupils need to understand word classes, spelling patterns and vocabulary choices. For Australian teachers and parents, the activities also support NAPLAN spelling, grammar and language conventions practice, especially where pupils need to recognise correct word forms in context.
The set includes clear pupil worksheets and answer pages, making it easy to use in class, for homework or for tutoring.
