Year 5 Present Perfect Tense Worksheets – Three Differentiated Levels with Answers

Build confidence using the present perfect tense

Help learners understand and practise the present perfect tense with this differentiated Year 5 English resource. Pupils work with has or have + a past participle, progressing from choosing the correct auxiliary verb to independently rewriting complete sentences and a paragraph.

The resource contains three carefully differentiated levels, making it easy to select work that suits each learner’s current understanding.

📚 What is included?

  • 3 differentiated pupil worksheets

  • 3 corresponding answer pages

  • 6 A4 pages in total

  • Triangle, Circle and Square difficulty levels

  • Regular and irregular past participles

  • Sentence-completion and rewriting activities

  • An extended paragraph-rewriting activity at the highest level

  • QR code linking to an external support video

  • One downloadable digital PDF

🔺 Triangle – Supported level

The Triangle worksheet provides the greatest level of scaffolding. Learners begin by circling the correct has or have, then supply the appropriate auxiliary verb independently. They finish by forming complete present perfect constructions using verbs including find, finish, lose, eat, clean and break.

Circle – Developing level

The Circle worksheet removes the multiple-choice support and introduces a wider selection of irregular past participles. Learners complete present perfect constructions before rewriting sentences from the simple past into the present perfect tense.

Square – Higher level

The Square worksheet requires greater independence. Learners form present perfect constructions, rewrite complete sentences and transform a short paragraph into the present perfect tense. This level includes verbs such as discover, write, forget, choose, give, build and sing.

✏️ Skills covered

  • Forming the present perfect tense

  • Selecting has or have to agree with the subject

  • Using past participles

  • Working with regular and irregular verbs

  • Changing simple-past sentences into the present perfect

  • Maintaining meaning while changing verb forms

  • Applying grammar knowledge to an extended paragraph

  • Developing sentence-level accuracy

This resource supports upper-primary grammar learning involving verb forms, auxiliary verbs and past participles. It provides useful practice for foundational grammar skills that may be encountered in UK SATs and the conventions-of-language aspects of NAPLAN.
