Year 4 Prefixes: in-, il-, im- and ir- Worksheets (862-864)
This Year 4 prefixes worksheet pack helps children learn and practise how the prefixes in-, il-, im- and ir- can be added to root words to change their meaning. The activities focus on common negative prefixes and support children in understanding that these prefixes often mean “not”.
Children will work with words such as incorrect, impossible, illegal, impolite, inactive, irregular, invisible, impatient, irresponsible, illogical, illegible, inaccurate, immature and incomplete. The worksheets move from matching words to meanings, to adding prefixes, sorting words by prefix, completing sentences and writing original sentences.
The pack includes three differentiated levels:
Triangles — matching prefix words to meanings, adding the correct prefix, choosing the correct word in a sentence and completing simple sentences.
Circles — adding prefixes to root words, sorting answers into in-, im-, il- and ir- groups, then choosing the correct word to complete sentences.
Squares — sorting a wider range of prefix words, completing more challenging sentences and writing independent sentences using prefix vocabulary.
This resource is ideal for Year 4 spelling, vocabulary and grammar practice, and is useful for classroom teaching, homework, revision, intervention groups or independent learning. It also supports broader preparation for KS2 English, SATs-style vocabulary and spelling work, and NAPLAN language conventions-style practice, especially where children need to understand word meaning, prefixes and spelling patterns.
Each worksheet includes a matching answer sheet, making it easy for teachers, parents and tutors to check work quickly.
