🔺 Triangle – supported level

The Triangle worksheet introduces commas through accessible list-based activities. Pupils:

  • Add commas to seven sentences containing lists

  • Choose the correctly punctuated sentence in six question pairs

  • Write two original list sentences using colourful picture prompts

The visual prompts and sentence-selection activity provide additional structure for pupils who benefit from greater support.

Circle – developing level

The Circle worksheet develops greater independence by asking pupils to:

  • Add commas to six lists

  • Add commas after six sentence openers

  • Rewrite six sentences containing both opening elements and lists

  • Identify and add all missing commas within complete sentences

This level increases the amount of independent writing while combining more than one use of the comma.

Square – higher-level challenge

The Square worksheet extends learning through more demanding sentence and paragraph work. Pupils:

  • Add commas after six fronted adverbials

  • Move five subordinate clauses to the beginning of sentences and punctuate them correctly

  • Rewrite a paragraph using commas, full stops and capital letters

This level requires pupils to apply punctuation knowledge independently across increasingly complex sentences and connected writing.

🎯 Skills covered

  • Commas in lists

  • Correct and incorrect comma placement

  • Sentence openers

  • Fronted adverbials

  • Subordinate clauses

  • Reordering clauses

  • Capital letters and full stops

  • Editing and rewriting sentences

  • Paragraph punctuation

  • Independent sentence composition
