Year 2 Suffix -ly Worksheets (886-888)
These Year 2 Suffix -ly worksheets help children understand how the suffix -ly can be added to describing words to show how something is done. The activities support pupils as they move from recognising -ly words to using them accurately in their own sentences.
Children practise changing root words such as quick, slow, quiet, loud, kind, neat, soft, careful, clear and safe into -ly words, including quickly, slowly, quietly, loudly, kindly, neatly, softly, carefully, clearly and safely. They then apply these words in simple sentence contexts, helping them build confidence with spelling, grammar and sentence construction.
This resource includes three differentiated levels:
Triangles – a supported worksheet with root word practice, correct-word choices, matching activities and simple sentence completion.
Circles – a middle-level worksheet with more sentence-based practice and independent word selection.
Squares – a more challenging worksheet where pupils complete sentences and then write their own sentences using -ly words.
The worksheets are ideal for Year 2 English, KS1 grammar, spelling homework, suffix practice, adverb work, intervention groups, morning tasks, independent practice or revision. They are also useful for preparing pupils for KS1 SATs-style spelling, punctuation and grammar work, as children need to recognise how words change and how word choices affect sentences.
Although designed for the UK curriculum, this resource can also support international learners, including children working towards NAPLAN-style grammar and spelling skills, especially when practising word forms, sentence accuracy and vocabulary development.
Each worksheet comes with a matching answer sheet, making the resource easy to use for homework, tutoring, classroom practice or quick assessment.
