Representing subtraction using labelled jumps
Applying place-value knowledge
Developing mental subtraction strategies
Recording subtraction calculations accurately
📈 Differentiated Learning Progression
🔺 Triangle – Introductory Level
Pupils subtract numbers from 11 to 17 from two-digit numbers. Each calculation can be completed by subtracting one group of ten followed by the remaining ones. This level provides the most accessible number range and smallest number-line jumps.
⭕ Circle – Developing Level
Pupils continue working with two-digit numbers but subtract larger values from 12 to 44. The questions require jumps of up to four tens followed by a smaller ones jump, strengthening place-value understanding and confidence with larger calculations.
⬜ Square – Higher Level
Pupils tackle more demanding calculations involving subtrahends from 19 to 58 and minuends extending to 148. This level introduces three-digit numbers and jumps of up to five tens, including calculations that cross below 100.
