Year 2 Counting in 3s Differentiated Worksheets and Answers – Three Ability Levels

🔢 Build confidence with counting forwards and backwards in 3s

Help pupils develop fluency with number sequences using this engaging set of differentiated counting-in-3s worksheets. Children complete missing numbers as they guide dogs to bones, chickens to nests and frogs to flies.

The resource provides three symbol-coded levels—Triangle, Circle and Square—making it easy to select a suitable worksheet for classroom practice, homework, intervention or extension.

📦 What is included

  • 3 differentiated pupil worksheets

  • 3 corresponding answer pages

  • 6 A4 pages in total

  • 18 numbered counting sequences

  • 78 missing-number entries

  • Triangle, Circle and Square levels

  • A QR code for an external counting-in-3s support video

  • One downloadable digital PDF set

🔺 Triangle – Lower-ability level

Triangle begins with strongly supported sequences based on multiples of 3. The amount of information provided gradually decreases, helping pupils progress from completing a single missing number to filling several gaps independently. Numbers extend from 0 to 105.

Circle – Middle-ability level

Circle introduces starting numbers that are not necessarily multiples of 3. Pupils complete six-number sequences by repeatedly adding 3. Later questions provide a number within the sequence, requiring children to count both backwards and forwards. Values range from 23 to 210.

Square – Higher-ability level

Square provides further independent practice using varied starting points and clues positioned within the sequences. Pupils apply their counting-in-3s knowledge in both directions, with values ranging from 26 to 203.

🎯 Skills covered

  • Counting forwards in steps of 3

  • Counting backwards in steps of 3

  • Completing missing-number sequences

  • Recognising constant intervals

  • Working from a given starting number

  • Using an internal number clue

  • Developing fluency with multiples and early multiplication patterns

  • Applying number-pattern reasoning across two- and three-digit values

🏫 Curriculum and assessment relevance

This resource develops foundational counting, number-pattern and early multiplication skills. It can support pupils who are ready to explore counting in 3s and provide useful preparation for later work involving the 3 times table.

The activities may also help children practise foundational numerical fluency used in assessments such as NAPLAN and SATs. The resource is not officially endorsed by, affiliated with or claimed to be aligned to either assessment programme.
